The RBE – Rotor Blade Extension is a proven product that increases wind turbine efficiency and consists of an additional blade tip segment fixed at the rotor blade tip. RBE products apply to wind farms that have not yielded the expected results at the design phase because of earlier planning mistakes.
RBE can be applied to all kinds of machines, which can bear the load increase deriving from the assembly of a specific RBE. Broadly speaking, it is considered that a turbine always has load reserves when the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) class of the turbine is higher than the IEC class which characterizes the site where the wind farms is set up. This load reserve can be used by the RBE up to the turbine effort limit.
The percentage of efficiency increase after the assembly of the RBE depends on the machine and the local conditions where the wind farm is set up. For the RBE type BONUS 1.0MW, the increase is about 7%, which has been proven in our farms in Germany, whereas for the RBE type BONUS 1.3MW, the increase is about 5/6%, in the farms in Portugal. The new prototypes nearly have a 9% output increase and will be compatible with blades of an extensive standard type of wind turbines installed worldwide.
